When a residential tower is being constructed, many architects and developers struggle with determining what products to use that will protect against staining, especially in the kitchens.  For example, those natural stone countertops after installation have been sealed with water-based products that generally last up to one year however, they sometimes provide a false sense of security.  And if you forget to maintain the sealer, the surface has no protection.  Please picture this, a beautiful stone countertop is installed and the new owners have a glass of wine to celebrate their new home and inadvertently a few drops of wine run down the bottle or glass without being noticed.  If the stone was sealed with a water-based sealer, there is an approximate time of 20-30 minutes before the wine will start to penetrate the sealer and the staining agents will start to go to work as well as the acid content will possibly start to etch the stone. 

This is more common than one could imagine as there are many staining agents in the  condiments found in a typical kitchen including lemon juice, tomato sauce, coffee and tea to just name a few.
